Guyana
Guyana is a sovereign state on the northern mainland of South America. An English speaking country, with cricket and calypso music, it is culturally connected to the Carribean region. . Guyana is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north, Brazil to the south and southwest, Suriname to the east and Venezuela to the west. With 215,000 km2, Guyana is the third-smallest country on mainland South America after Uruguay and Suriname. Its capital, Georgetown, is known for British Colonial Architecture, including tall, timber, St. George's Anglican Cathedral. 
 
Guyana is the only South American nation in which English is the official language. The majority of the population, however, speak Guyanese Creole, an English-based creole language, as a first language. 
 
Education in Guyana is provided largely by the government of Guyana, through the Ministry of Education and its arms in the ten different regions of the country. The statutory age for beginning compulsory education is five years nine months, and students are required to attend school until age 16. Primary education lasts for 6 years, while secondary education for 5 years. After which, students have the option to go to college and/or post graduate studies. School year starts in September and ends in July.
